#DSBreakdown: What qualities make a great employer?

Let’s break it down…

There’s so much that goes into finding the right job. While it’s more common to focus on what you bring to an employer  (whether that’s building your skill set, meeting certain requirements or  negotiating a good salary), where you work is just as important as the role you’re committing to. We’re confident, the type of company you work for has a significant impact on your overall job satisfaction. In this next #DSbreakdown, we list everything you should look for in your next employment opportunity. Let’s get straight to it.

  1. Work-life balance

Taking its rightful place, a healthy work-life balance tops the list when it comes to maintaining your health and relationships. Working for an employer who respects your time off and pursuits outside of work makes a big difference to your job satisfaction. Interestingly, 18% of millenials listed work-life balance as the most important quality in a company compared to 19% of the working population. When a company’s social values align with your own, not only are you motivated on a daily basis, but you’re also able to grow both personally and professionally.

  1. Open to feedback

Employees want to be heard. Working for an organisation where your opinion matters encourages you to share your feedback, rather than being dismissive. Great employers don’t just provide feedback on how an employee is performing, but also where they might be able to improve in their role. If your employer is closed to new ideas, the company’s reach and ability to remain competitive could be at risk. Look for an organisation that maintains a healthy, open culture – where people give and receive feedback on a fluid basis.

  1. Recognises accomplishments

If you’re never recognised for your accomplishments, your incentive to work hard will fall short. Look out for an employer who will offer you feedback, review your hard work and most importantly – acknowledges it in a worthwhile way. There’s no two ways about it, celebration leads to more success and brings added value to the satisfaction you experience when taking note of your accomplishments.

  1. Endorses opportunities for growth

Besides providing you with opportunities to learn about your industry, a great employer should also offer opportunities for growth and advancement within your company. In the case of entry-level jobs, the incentive of a promotion is a great motivator to learn as much as possible and prove your commitment to the team. Moreover, there should always be potential for others to move up into the ranks, confident and trained to handle new responsibilities.

  1. Fosters a positive work environment

You spend more time with the people at your job, than with anyone else. That being said, the type of atmosphere you work in, will either alienate you or make you want to get your friends hired. Creativity thrives in a positive work environment, where members of your team share responsibilities and help out in times of need. Having an enjoyable work atmosphere is the first step to achieving this.

While each of these qualities will serve to benefit you in the long run – it’s also important to find an employer that represents something you believe in. Whether this pertains to a product, service or way of working, having a true inclination towards the core of the business is what it takes to enjoy it!
