#DSBreakdown: What are the hottest fields in IT right now?

As the world of tech continues to evolve at an unprecedented rate, the demand for professionals with advanced skill sets in IT and data have never been greater. With the COVID-19 pandemic bringing about a massive shift in business and technology, it’s no surprise that roles in IT currently dominate the lists of ‘most in demand jobs’ for the future. In fact, startups valued at $1 billion or more are 33% more likely to prioritize several tech skills in their new hire plans versus their colleagues. With this in mind, our latest #DSBreakdown gives you our take on the hottest fields in IT right now.

  1. Big Data and Internet of things

Let’s get things started with an increasingly popular one. As the number of connected devices continue to grow, businesses have become increasingly large – lacking sufficient people to collect and analyse data sets. With the growing convergence of big data and IoT, it’s no surprise that roles like data analyst, data engineer and data scientist are topping numerous lists when it comes to some of the highest paying jobs in IT. While hard tech skills like proficiency with Rstudio or Python are usually taken into account for these positions, soft skills such as communication, curiosity and critical thinking are just as important.

  1. Machine Learning/ Artificial Intelligence

With hiring in these areas on the rise globally,  AI and Machine Learning have already begun to revolutionize industries. In fact, LinkedIn’s 2020 Emerging Jobs Report UK found that ‘Artificial Intelligence Specialist’ was the number one emerging job that year. Some of the most in demand skills across these fields include Python, Java, R and Natural Language Processing. From what we’ve seen, IT and tech professionals that are armed with these skills are sure to be in high demand this year, with employers offering high premiums. It’s no wonder that they’re often referred to as one of the most disruptive skills in tech.

Despite the rapidly changing job market, software developers continue to be in peak demand – especially full-stack pros with cutting edge skills. Having revolutionized the way businesses meet the growing demands of their customers, the best DevOps professionals are those that have the ability to work with other areas across the business. In fact, 38% of hiring managers say that hiring full-stack developers is a priority. Being able to speed up development cycles and processes while still maintaining a high degree of accuracy is what talented DevOps professionals are about. 1. Cyber Security

In the new normal, most employees are working remotely. As a result, businesses have become more susceptible to cyber-attacks and threats. The importance for companies to keep their networks safe has led cybersecurity to be one of the top technology trends last year. While every discipline within cybersecurity is hot, research reveals that cloud security and application development are the fastest growing cyber-security skills areas. Security is at the epicenter of everything, so acquiring some key skills will prove critical whether you work on the infrastructure or application side of things.
